Remote starter T-harnesses

A T-harness is a pre-made loom built for one specific vehicle. It plugs in between your car's factory connectors and your remote starter, so most of the connections are made by pushing plugs together rather than cutting and soldering wires by hand.

That does two things. It cuts install time considerably, and it means the vehicle's own wiring is largely left as the factory built it — which matters if the car is under warranty or you ever want the system removed cleanly.

On most vehicles a few connections are still made by hand. A T-harness removes the bulk of the splicing, not all of it.

Which one do I need?

This is the part people get wrong. A T-harness is matched to both your vehicle and your control module, so the same car can need a different harness depending on which brand of starter is going in.

Don't guess from the part number. Search your vehicle and we'll show you the complete solution we'd install ourselves, with the correct harness already matched to the module.

iDatalink and iDatastart (ADS-THR) — the largest range, covering most North American and Asian vehicles
Fortin (THAR) — 61 harnesses, including the best European coverage we carry
Firstech and Compustar (FTI) — 33 harnesses for Compustar systems

Buying the harness on its own?

A T-harness is an accessory, not a remote starter. It contains no electronics of its own — you also need a control module, and on most vehicles a bypass. If you're starting from scratch, a plug and play kit bundles the module and the correct harness together and works out cheaper than buying them separately.

How to read a T-harness part number

Every brand encodes the vehicle platform into the suffix. Once you know the pattern, the part numbers stop being alphabet soup.

iDatastart ADS-THR- then the platform code. HA is Honda and Acura, TL is Toyota and Lexus, GM is General Motors, CH is the Chrysler group, NI is Nissan and Infiniti, FO and FM are Ford, MA is Mazda, HK is Hyundai and Kia, SU is Subaru, VW and AU are Volkswagen and Audi, BZ is Mercedes-Benz, BM is BMW.

Fortin THAR- or THAR-ONE- then a similar code: HON for Honda, TOY for Toyota, KHY for Kia and Hyundai, CHR for Chrysler, NIS for Nissan, FOR for Ford, GM for General Motors, MAZ for Mazda, SUB for Subaru, VW and AUD for Volkswagen and Audi.

Firstech FTI- then the platform: HD for Honda, TL for Toyota and Lexus, MA for Mazda.

The number after the letters is the generation, and it's the part that catches people out. An ADS-THR-HA2 and an ADS-THR-HA10 are both Honda harnesses for completely different years and connectors.

Why the same car can need different harnesses

A T-harness has to match two things: the connectors in your vehicle, and the control module it plugs into. Change the brand of remote starter and the harness changes with it, even on the identical car.

That's why we don't recommend shopping harnesses by part number. Our vehicle pages list the complete solution — module, harness, bypass and any accessories — as a matched set, because that's the only way it goes together correctly.

What a T-harness doesn't do

It isn't a bypass module. On almost every vehicle built since the late 1990s, the immobilizer has to be satisfied separately before the engine will run without a key present. Some control modules have that built in; others need a separate bypass module.

It also doesn't include a remote. Many vehicles can start from the factory key fob using 3xLock — press lock three times — but where that isn't supported you'll need a key fob kit as well.

We've been fitting these in Markham since 2003, with a lifetime warranty on our installation work. A plug-and-play install is quicker than a hardwired one, though our installation price is the same either way.

Doing it yourself? Everything ships free across Canada, and our technicians will take your call when you're under the dash and something isn't lining up.
