Wire harness tape and adhesives

What separates a professional install from an amateur one is often just what the wiring is wrapped in. Bare looms buzz against panels, chafe through insulation over time, and look like exactly what they are.

Cloth harness tape

The tape vehicle manufacturers use, and for good reason. It's designed to deaden noise rather than just hold wires together, so a loom wrapped in it doesn't rattle against a dash panel. It also unwinds cleanly years later, unlike electrical tape, which turns to glue.

PET cloth tape handles engine bay heat. Fleece tape is the quietest and belongs behind the dash where rattles are most audible.

Electrical tape

Fine for insulating a joint, wrong for wrapping a loom. In a hot car the adhesive migrates, the tape unravels, and you're left with a sticky mess round your wiring. Use it for what it's for.

Butyl rubber

The putty-like sealant for sealing grommets, feeding wires through firewalls, and sealing camera and antenna holes against water. It stays flexible permanently rather than curing hard.

Cable ties for anchoring the loom once it's wrapped.
