Which steps to follow for your remote

Find the model number or FCC ID on the back of your remote or inside the battery cover, then use the matching steps.

  • Ignition key stepsThe 711TX, 721TX, 2514TX, 613TX, 623TX, 2524TX and 5224TX, on RS-611, RS-613, RS-623, RS-711XR, RS-721, RSS-2514XR, RSS-2524 and RSS-5224 systems. No need to reach the control module.
  • 5225TX LCD remoteOn the RSS-5225, put the remote in pairing mode first, then follow the ignition key steps.
  • DIP switch stepsIf you can reach the control module and it has a row of 8 DIP switches (XR modules), this is the quickest way.
  • 5325D-TX and 2615-TXThese are digital remotes for Directed DS4, DS4+, DS3 and DS3+ systems (antenna 6866T or 6867T). They pair with the system's Valet button, not the key. Use the Directed DS4 and DS3 pairing guide under Manuals and guides.

Older Astroflex systems, such as the RSS-4204A, RSS-2205A and the Series 500 to 4100 with the 310-052-300 remote: we don't have confirmed steps for every one of these. Submit a support ticket with the control module's part number and we'll find the right steps.

More answers for the Remotes

Program with the ignition key

Have every remote you want to keep with you before you start. The first remote you program wipes all the others from the system.

  • 1. Open the hoodLeave it open the whole time. The hood pin has to be working, or the system won't start programming.
  • 2. Key to RUNPut the key in the ignition and turn it to RUN (on). Don't start the engine.
  • 3. Press the brake oncePress and release the brake pedal.
  • 4. Key off three timesWithin 10 seconds, turn the key from RUN to OFF three times. The parking lights flash 4 times: the system is ready to learn.
  • 5. Press the lock buttonPress lock on the remote (on one-button remotes, press the button). Don't press panic. The parking lights flash once: that remote is stored.
  • 6. Next remoteRepeat step 5 for each remote, up to 4 in total.
  • 7. Press the brakePress the brake pedal to finish, then test every remote.

A fifth remote replaces the first. If your system controls driver memory (seat, mirrors), remotes in positions 1 and 2 are driver 1 and positions 3 and 4 are driver 2. With only two remotes, program each one twice.

5225TX LCD remote: set pairing mode first

The 5225TX on the RSS-5225 has to be put in pairing mode before the system can learn it.

  • 1. Pairing modePress and hold the P button for about 4 seconds and choose Pair. The screen shows “coding”.
  • 2. Ignition key stepsFollow the ignition key steps above. At step 5, press the lock button on the 5225TX.
  • 3. ConfirmationThe parking lights flash once and the remote shows “passed”. Do the same for each remote, then press the brake to finish.
Program with the DIP switches (XR modules)

Quickest if you can reach the control module and it has a row of 8 DIP switches.

  • 1. Switch 8 onSet DIP switch 8 to ON, then press the brake.
  • 2. Press each remotePress any button except panic on each remote, one after another. For each one stored, the parking lights flash once and the module's LED blinks quickly.
  • 3. Switch 8 offSet switch 8 back to OFF and press the brake. Test every remote.

The same rules apply: up to 4 remotes, and the first one programmed wipes the others.

Programming needs a working hood pin

Astrostart systems only go into programming with the hood open and the hood pin working. A hood pin is a plunger switch that tells the system whether the hood is open. If the parking lights don't flash 4 times at step 4 of the ignition key steps, the hood pin is the usual reason.

Hood pins live under the hood near heat, water, dirt and road salt, so they're often rusty, dirty or broken. Mechanics can also bend or break them by closing the hood on them.

Try this first: with the hood open, gently but firmly pull up on the plunger, and while you hold it up, twist it back and forth. That grinds the dirt off the contacts between the shaft and the plunger, and often gets a dead pin working again.

Still not working? Check the terminal where the wire connects. If it's rusty or dirty, clean it. If the pin is bent or broken, replace it: replacement hood pins are here.

How to free up a sticky hood pin
  1. Hood open, but the remote starter gets no signal. Rust and dirt on the contacts are blocking it.
  2. Gently, but firmly, pull up on the plunger and hold it there.
  3. Keep it pulled up and twist it back and forth. This grinds the dirt off the contacts.
  4. Clean contacts, signal back. Now the system will let you program.
Lights didn't flash? Quick checks
  • No 4 flashes at step 4Check the hood pin, and that you turned the key RUN to OFF three times within 10 seconds of pressing the brake. If you miss the window, start again from step 1.
  • Main switchMany Astrostart systems have a main on/off switch under the dash. Make sure it's ON before you start.
  • No flash at step 5Put a fresh battery in the remote (key fob batteries) and check it's the right remote for your system by matching the FCC ID.
  • Old remotes stopped workingThat's expected: the first remote programmed wipes the others. Program every remote you want to keep in the same session.
