Our verdict

Many dash cameras can't meet M217 at their factory settings: 72 hours of 1080p takes more room than a memory card holds once the camera records at its default quality. A fleet recorder with its own SSD clears it with room to spare, and leaves three camera inputs free for rear or side cameras later. The one open question is night vision, which the Act doesn't define yet. This camera uses a low-light sensor rather than infrared, which glares off a windshield. If the regulations ask for more, we'll update this page and tell our customers.

The four camera rules, and how this kit meets them

From BC's Dashboard Cameras in Commercial Vehicles Act (Bill M217). The camera has to record the road ahead through the front windshield whenever the truck is running.

Rule 1

Keeps at least 72 hours

About 500 hours of front-camera video on the 1 TB SSD, worked out at the recorder's highest setting.

Rule 2

Records 1080p HD

The camera and the recorder are both full 1920 x 1080.

Rule 3

Night vision

A low-light sensor rated to 0.1 lux with 120 dB WDR. No infrared, which glares off a windshield.

Rule 4

Factory settings, local storage

Records to its own SSD as it comes. No cloud account, SIM or subscription.

Try it

Will it hold 72 hours?

BC's dash camera law asks for at least 72 hours of recording, at the camera's factory settings. Pick a drive and see how long it lasts.

  • Meets the 72-hour rule
  • About 500 hours

At the recorder's highest setting, one camera writes about 1.8 GB an hour, so the kit's 1 TB SSD keeps about 500 hours before it records over the oldest footage. Try a smaller drive: on this recorder even a memory card clears 72 hours, but an SSD is built for writing every time the truck runs.

Try a different drive

We count 90% of a drive as usable, leaving room for formatting and the recorder's own files.

The details

Everything one heavy truck needs for BC's dash camera law (Bill M217), in one order: a fleet-grade recorder, a 1080p windshield camera, the cable to join them and a 1 TB SSD. We fit the SSD, set the recorder up and test-record before it ships, so your shop can install it and go.

How it meets the four M217 camera rules

  • Keeps at least 72 hours of recording. The recorder's highest setting is 4 Mbps per camera, about 1.8 GB an hour. Seventy-two hours of the front camera needs about 130 GB, and the 1 TB SSD holds roughly 500 hours. Because that's worked out at the highest setting, the factory default is covered whatever it's set to.
  • Records 1080p. The camera and the recorder are both full 1920 x 1080.
  • Night vision. The camera has a low-light sensor rated to 0.1 lux with 120 dB wide dynamic range, rather than infrared. The Act requires recording through the front windshield, and infrared lights reflect off the glass and wash out the picture. The Act doesn't define night vision yet; if the regulations do, we'll update this page.
  • Records at factory settings to local storage. Footage goes to the SSD inside the recorder. No cloud account, SIM card or subscription is needed; the recorder's GPS, Wi-Fi and 4G features are optional.

Set up and tested before it ships

We fit the SSD, format it in the recorder, connect the camera and test-record before the kit leaves our shop, so it arrives ready to install.

Installing it

  • Most fleet shops can install it: constant 12 V or 24 V power, ignition, ground, and one camera cable from the windshield to the recorder. Mount the recorder somewhere dry and out of the way.
  • In the Greater Toronto Area? We install it at our Markham shop: book an appointment.
  • Elsewhere in BC or Canada? We'll introduce you to an installer near you.

Good to know

  • The Act covers commercial vehicles over 11,793 kg gross vehicle weight rating on BC highways, including trucks from outside BC. It received Royal Assent on May 28, 2026, and comes into force on a date the province sets by regulation. As of November 2026, that date hasn't been set. Read our guide to the BC dash camera law.
  • The camera faces the road. The kit has no driver-facing camera. Recordings must be handled under BC privacy law.
  • Footage stays on the recorder's SSD until you copy it off. Tell us how your shop wants to review footage and we'll set the recorder up that way before it ships.
  • Recorder and camera: 1-year warranty.

Common questions

Does this kit meet BC's Bill M217?

It's built to the four camera requirements in the Act as written: it keeps at least 72 hours of recording (about 500 hours on the 1 TB SSD), records 1080p, has a low-light camera for recording at night, and records at its factory settings to its own storage. The Act doesn't define night vision yet and the province hasn't published regulations, so we'll update this page if they add anything.

Which trucks need a dash camera under M217?

Commercial vehicles, as defined in BC's Commercial Transport Act, with a gross vehicle weight rating over 11,793 kg (about 26,000 lb) on BC highways, including vehicles from outside BC. The owner installs and maintains the camera (the lessee, for a leased vehicle), and the driver keeps it recording and unobstructed. Our guide to the BC dash camera law has more.

When does the BC dash camera law take effect?

The Dashboard Cameras in Commercial Vehicles Act received Royal Assent on May 28, 2026. It comes into force on a date the province sets by regulation, and as of November 2026 that date hasn't been set. If you have several trucks to equip, it's worth starting before the date is announced.

Does the camera have night vision?

It has a low-light sensor rated to 0.1 lux with 120 dB wide dynamic range, so it keeps recording after dark and copes with headlight glare. It doesn't use infrared lights: the Act requires recording through the front windshield, and infrared reflects off the glass. The Act doesn't define night vision yet; if the regulations set a standard, we'll update this page.

Do I need a SIM card, cloud account or subscription?

No. The kit records to the SSD inside the recorder, with no monthly fee. The recorder also has GPS, Wi-Fi and a 4G modem for fleets that want live tracking or remote viewing later, but the law doesn't need any of them.

How do I get footage off the recorder?

Footage stays on the recorder until you copy it off. Tell us how your shop wants to review it and we'll set the recorder up that way before it ships. To watch the cameras in the truck, add a 7-inch monitor.

Will it work in a 24-volt truck?

Yes. The recorder runs on 10 to 32 volts DC, so it works in 12 V and 24 V vehicles.

Can I add rear or side cameras later?

Yes. The recorder has four camera inputs and the kit uses one. Rear and side cameras record to the same SSD, and with all four recording at the highest setting it still keeps about 125 hours. See Add cameras later.

How does fleet pricing work?

Order 5 or more kits and every kit is 5% off, applied automatically at checkout, with no code needed. For larger fleets or extra cameras, email sales@lockdownsecurity.ca for a quote.

Do you ship to BC?

Yes. We ship across Canada from Markham, Ontario, and shipping on this kit is free. Ordering for a fleet? Email us first and we'll confirm stock and the ship date.

Can you install it?

Yes, at our Markham shop in the Greater Toronto Area. Elsewhere, most fleet shops can install it: it needs constant power, ignition, ground and one camera cable. Or we'll introduce you to an installer near you.

What about privacy?

The Act says recordings must be collected, used, kept and destroyed under BC's privacy laws. The kit's camera faces the road through the windshield; there's no driver-facing camera. Let your drivers know the camera is there, and set a policy for who can view footage and how long you keep it.

Equipping a fleet?

Tell us how many trucks, what they are and when you need them. We'll confirm stock and put together a quote.
