Our verdict

This is the first thing I put on any car that's had mice in it. It's the same Japanese tape Honda's dealers use, and it does one job well: what's wrapped in it stops getting chewed. What it won't do is keep them out of the engine bay or the air box, so if they keep coming back, add a plate unit at the way in. Wrap the runs they've already found first, and wear gloves.

    1. Clean the surface of oil, dirt and loose insulation.
    2. Wrap with a 50% overlap, stretching it slightly for a snug fit.
    3. Finish with a secure tail and press the edges down.
    4. Check it now and then, and re-wrap anywhere it frays.

    Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards. Capsaicin is an irritant. Keep the tape away from direct exhaust heat.

    The details

    This is the Japanese-made capsaicin rodent tape that Honda sells through its dealers as part 4019-2317. Same tape, 20 metre (65.6 foot) roll. Our part number is LY-40192317.

    Honda doesn't make it. It's made in Japan by the company that supplies Honda, and it isn't sold as a Honda part. It works on any vehicle, not just Hondas.

    Rodents chew wiring, and the repair bills are substantial. The faults are often intermittent and miserable to trace. Some newer vehicles use soy-based wiring insulation, which many technicians believe makes the problem worse.

    The tape has capsaicin encapsulated in the backing, the compound that makes chilli peppers hot. A rodent that bites a wrapped loom gets a mouthful of heat instead of a meal. Unlike sprays, it doesn't wash off or need reapplying every few months.

    Where to use it

    Wiring harnesses, EVAP hoses, fuel lines and any exposed cable run. It applies like ordinary electrical tape and conforms to shapes. It also suits anything that sits parked for months: RVs, boats, trailers, lawn tractors and generators.

    It protects what it covers and nothing else. It won't stop mice nesting in the air filter box or cabin air intake, so check those too if rodents have been in the vehicle.

    Keep it away from direct exhaust heat.

    Is this the Honda rodent tape?

    It's the same tape. Honda doesn't make it: it's made in Japan by the company that supplies Honda, and Honda sells it through its dealers as part 4019-2317. Ours isn't sold as a Honda part, and it works on any vehicle, not just Hondas.

    Where should I wrap it?

    Start with anything already chewed, then the harnesses on top of the engine and around the battery, then fuel lines, EVAP hoses and other soft lines they can reach. It protects what it covers and nothing else, so it won't stop mice nesting in the air filter box or cabin air intake.

    Is it safe to handle?

    Wear gloves, wash your hands afterwards and keep your hands away from your eyes. Capsaicin is an irritant, but otherwise the tape is handled like any electrical tape.

    How much wrapping time do I need if you do it?

    Thirty minutes covers the highest-risk runs, because we wrap those first: anything already chewed, then the harnesses on top of the engine and around the battery. Harnesses behind the liners or underneath take longer to reach. Booked with a Level 2 install, the panels are already off, so the wrapping time goes into wrapping. Tell us your vehicle and we'll suggest how much time it needs.

    What if they keep coming back?

    Add a plate unit at the way in. The M186 wires to a car you drive, and the battery-powered M229 suits one that sits. Tape on what they've found plus plates at the way in is the combination we install most.

    What if you find a nest in my vehicle?

    We stop the job. We don't remove nests: the vehicle has to be cleaned by a detailer or cleanup provider first, because dried droppings can carry hantavirus. Once it's clean, book again and we'll protect it so they don't move back in. Don't sweep, vacuum or blow a nest out yourself, since that puts the dust in the air.

    Does it work on generators, boats or lawn tractors?

    Yes. It suits anything that sits parked for months: RVs, boats, trailers, lawn tractors and generators.
