Our verdict

The 710HD is the first radio we've seen with the iDatalink Maestro module built right into the chassis. On a normal Maestro install you buy the radio, then a separate ADS-MRR2 module, then the vehicle T-harness, and find room behind the dash for the module. Here the T-harness plugs straight into the back of the radio, so there's one less box to buy, mount and go wrong, and you still keep your steering wheel buttons, climate controls and factory cameras on supported vehicles. It's brand new, so we haven't had one on the bench yet. We'll update this verdict once we've installed the first ones.

The Compustar 710HD (CMR-710HD) is Firstech's first car stereo: a digital media receiver with a 6.9-inch 720p HD touchscreen, wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an iDatalink Maestro RR2 module built into the radio itself.

Why the built-in Maestro matters

With most radios, keeping your steering wheel buttons, climate controls and factory cameras means adding a separate Maestro module such as the ADS-MRR2 behind the dash. The 710HD has that module inside, so your vehicle's Maestro T-harness plugs straight into the back of the radio. That's one less part to buy, find room for and wire up. Firstech lists more than 5,000 compatible vehicles.

What you'll need for your vehicle

The 710HD fits a standard double-DIN dash opening. Most installs need the Maestro T-harness for your vehicle, a double-DIN dash kit and usually an antenna adapter. You do not need a separate Maestro RR or RR2 module. Vehicles with a factory amplifier or premium sound system can need extra parts. Common questions

Do I still need an iDatalink Maestro module?

No. The 710HD has the Maestro RR2 module built in, so you don't need a separate ADS-MRR or ADS-MRR2. You still need the Maestro T-harness for your vehicle and a dash kit, and usually an antenna adapter. Many iDatalink Maestro dash kits include the T-harness. Our vehicle bundles put the right parts together for you.

Will it fit my vehicle?

It has a double-DIN size screen on a compact single-DIN chassis, so it fits a standard double-DIN dash opening with the right dash kit. Firstech lists more than 5,000 vehicles that work with its Maestro integration. Send us your year, make and model and we'll tell you exactly which parts you need.

Will I keep my steering wheel controls and backup camera?

On vehicles iDatalink Maestro supports, yes: the 710HD keeps your steering wheel controls, climate controls and factory cameras. What's available depends on your vehicle and trim, so tell us what yours has and we'll check before you order.

Does it do wired CarPlay as well as wireless?

Yes. It has wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Can I add amplifiers or a DSP?

Yes. It has 4-volt pre-outs for front, rear and subwoofer, plus a digital optical output for an outboard amplifier or DSP. It also has a 13-band EQ with crossover and time alignment.
