Factory radio guide

Toyota and Scion factory radios: which one do you have?

To add CarPlay or Android Auto to a Toyota or Scion, the car needs a factory colour touchscreen, and each generation of touchscreen takes its own kit. The quickest checks are your model year, whether the radio has an APP button, and the model number printed on the front of the radio. On a 2019 or newer model, check first whether CarPlay is already built in.

  1. Common up to about 2013; rare from 2014

    Radio without a touchscreen

Toyota or Scion factory radio with a text-only display

    No plug-in kit

    How to tell

    • The display shows only text or numbers, such as the station, track and clock, usually on one or two lines in a single colour.
    • Touching it does nothing, and it never shows a map, album art or a backup camera picture.
    • The radio usually has a CD slot, preset buttons, and volume and tuning knobs.
    • A touchscreen radio, by contrast, has a full colour screen (about 6 to 8 inches) with a home menu that responds to your finger.

    Quick check on the screen

With your foot on the brake, touch the display, then shift into reverse. If a touch menu or a camera picture appears on the radio, you have a touchscreen. If it only ever shows text, you don't.

    • Base trims of many 2003-2013 Toyota and Scion models

    Don't confuse it with

On some trucks and SUVs of this era the backup camera shows in the rear-view mirror, not on the radio. That doesn't make the radio a touchscreen.

CarPlay and Android Auto for this radio

There's no plug-in CarPlay kit for this radio, because every kit needs a factory colour touchscreen. Call us to talk about other options, such as replacing the radio.

  2. Land Cruiser 2003-2021; Highlander 2004-2007; Prius 2004-2009

Land Cruiser and early navigation screens

Toyota factory navigation touchscreens that share their hardware with Lexus models

    CarPlay kit available

    How to tell

    • A factory navigation touchscreen in the centre of the dash. Press MAP or DEST and a map comes up.
    • These Toyotas share their radio with Lexus models of the same years, which is why the kits carry Lexus part numbers.
    • The 2010-2012 Land Cruiser has the JBL 7-inch navigation screen.

    Quick check on the screen

Press MAP or DEST next to the screen. If a map with your position appears, you have the navigation screen these kits need.

    • Highlander 2004-2007 (navigation)
    • Prius 2004-2009 (navigation)

    Don't confuse it with

Other 2009-2014 Toyotas with the JBL 7-inch navigation screen, such as the Camry, Sienna and Tundra, use a different kit (see JBL 7-inch navigation radio).

  3. 2009-2014, depending on model

    JBL 7-inch navigation radio

Toyota 7-inch navigation touchscreen with JBL audio, from before Entune

    CarPlay kit available

    How to tell

    • A 7-inch colour touchscreen with factory navigation. Press MAP and a map comes up.
    • It comes with JBL audio. Look for JBL logos on the speaker grilles or on the radio.
    • The model number on the front of the radio starts with E70, for example E7026 on the Tundra and Sequoia.

    Quick check on the screen

Read the model number on the radio face. It's in small print, often near a corner. A number starting with E70 means this radio.

    • Sienna 2011-2014
    • Tundra 2010-2013
    • Venza 2009-2012

    Don't confuse it with

The APP-button radios and the Entune touchscreens look similar, and some years overlap (Sienna to 2014; 4Runner, Highlander and Tundra to 2013), so read the model number. The Land Cruiser's JBL screen uses a different kit (see Land Cruiser and early navigation screens).

CarPlay and Android Auto for this radio

We carry GROM TOY6VL2 for this radio. It uses your factory microphone, and your factory cameras keep working.

  4. 2012-2017 (most Toyota models 2012-2014; Yaris 2015-2017; Scion 2014-2016)

    APP-button touchscreen

Toyota or Scion first-generation Entune touchscreen with an APP button

    CarPlay kit available

    How to tell

    • A colour touchscreen with a physical button marked APP or APPS on the radio, which opens Toyota's Entune apps.
    • On 2013-2014 cars, the model number on the front of the radio starts with 570, P100 or 1000.
    • On the Toyota models listed, this is usually the navigation version of the radio. On a Scion, you need the touchscreen and the APP button.

    Quick check on the screen

Press the APP or APPS button. If an Entune apps menu opens, it's this radio. Then read the model number on the radio face to confirm.

    • Scion tC 2014-2016
    • Scion iQ 2014-2015

    Don't confuse it with

The Entune touchscreens (model numbers starting 5100, 1001 or 1005) need a different kit, even in the same model year. Both radios were fitted in 2013 and 2014, and the JBL radios (E70) don't work with this kit either, so always read the model number.

CarPlay and Android Auto for this radio

We carry GROM TOYHKVL2 for this radio. With it installed, the factory Bluetooth is disconnected, so calls go through CarPlay or Android Auto instead.

  5. 2013-2019, depending on model

    Entune touchscreen

Toyota Entune touchscreen, second generation, 2013-2019 (before Entune 3.0)

    CarPlay kit available

    How to tell

    • A colour touchscreen, usually about 6.1 inches (7 or 8 inches on some navigation and premium versions), with buttons and two knobs around it.
    • On 2013-2014 cars, the model number on the front of the radio starts with 5100, 1001 or 1005.
    • It can be the navigation or non-navigation version.
    • Check for a JBL logo on the speakers or radio, and for a 360-degree overhead camera view. Both affect which kit fits.

    Quick check on the screen

Read the model number on the radio face, look for a JBL badge on the radio or speaker grilles, and check whether your camera can show an overhead view of the whole car.

    • Yaris 2014-2018

    Don't confuse it with

The APP-button radios (model numbers starting 570, P100 or 1000) need a different kit. The newer Entune 3.0 screens that arrived around 2018-2019, for example in the 2018 Camry and the 2019 Avalon and RAV4, are a different system, and many of them already have CarPlay.

CarPlay and Android Auto for this radio

We carry ZZ-2 ITZ-TOY2, LDS EW-TYTCP-02B and GROM TENVL2 for this radio. The ZZ-2 and LDS kits don't fit cars with the panoramic 360-degree camera or the Prius Prime's large screen, and the ZZ-2 kit also doesn't fit JBL audio or a few specific Corolla, 4Runner and RAV4 radios, so call us if any of that applies. Check first on a 2019 or 2020 car, because many Toyotas from those years have CarPlay from the factory.
